The Zinc electroplating process involves submerging components in a number of chemical solutions and rinses. When designing a part for processing through a Zinc plating line it is important to make sure the component does not have design flaws which will cause rejects in production or problems in the field at a later stage.

 

Parts for zinc plating must:

1) Avoid folded sandwiched seams where possible. These seams trap solution during processing which will leach out in the drying stage causing staining.

2) Ensure adequate drainage. Parts which have the potential to carryover solutions in the zinc plating process must be designed with adequate drainage points in the form of notches or holes. This protects against plant contamination which can affect zinc plant chemistry.

3) Relief of entrapped air is vital to component design. Zinc plating can only occur where the plating solution contacts the component, air tapped in corners will prevent contact. Like drainage, providing voids or notching of corners to allow air to release is an important design consideration.

4) Substrate choice and presentation for zinc plating has an effect on the finished products appearance. Carbon black mild steel can never give you the same physical appearance as a high grade blemish free Mild steel. However the choice of substrate will have no effect on the corrosion performance of the zinc finish.
